Ladies Who Lunch From Home
In the middle of the world’s health pandemic, young professional women are still lunching…from home
I was in my New York apartment when…
My friend, Dahye, and I laughed amidst one of the strangest situations we had found ourselves in. It was scary. During moments of panic, I’d call her running to Whole Foods wondering if I’d make it before curfew, find enough produce, or if I’d be OK carrying my groceries home at the risk of getting infected in an Uber. As we laughed our fears and anxiety away, we chatted about our quarantine rituals. From watching ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians’, Vogue’s ‘In the Bag’ to making bread, we gradually made it to remote working. As I made a joke about lunching from home and how I had gone back to skipping meals due to the run-on Zoom calls, ‘Ladies Who Lunch’ came about.
I’m making a Slack channel just for us so we can chat about non-work stuff and forget about the daily struggles, and connect. Maybe we can even lunch from home, and block out our 12pm ET spot.
After I created the Slack channel, Dahye and I realized other women were probably needing a break too, so we grew the community and added some of our other friends. The minute the Forbes article, “I Can’t Take It Anymore: How To Cope With The Lockdown As An Extrovert”, we knew we were on to something. With applications coming in, we wondered what the community would be like, and how to build one where women of different age groups could come together and feel supported.
We still have a long way to go and kicking back ideas to solidify the group. Given our busy schedules and multiple extra-curriculars or side hustles, it’s not always easy. We’re hopeful it’ll continue flourishing into something special.
Taking it easy, and one lunch at a time
If there’s something this pandemic has taught us is to take it one day at a time, and that’s one lunch at a time. Ladies Who Lunch From Home has been a virtual space for us to hold lunches with whomever’s available, chat in an ad hoc fashion in different themed channels, to quarantini’s. My favourite channel? The #investing one. Women are really looking for investing opportunities and are willing to learn and share resources. From wealth management advice to sharing what stocks we’ve been buying, it’s been interesting to learn where everyone is and also how the pandemic’s phases have shifted attitudes. Another personal favourite is the #outfit-of-the-home. Brands like Pangaia exploded and e-commerce especially active-wear have done very well. Sharing our purchases has been a therapeutic way to ease the seriousness of the matter, and hold on to simple things. We all need a little bit of laughter, a little bit of hope, and a glimpse of light to see the end.
